Photographs play a considerable part in our fragile world of keeping memories alive. The longer you are in the business of photography, more often this type of news comes to your inbox. I have mixed emotions, starting with shock, sadness then feeling blessed that at some point I did something to help keep that person’s memory alive for those left grieving and celebrating their loved one’s life.
In 2005, the year I got married, a dear friend of ours died unexpectedly. I remember our photographer had taken a great professional photo of him and his young daughter at our wedding. Because our wedding was shot on film, I remember helping his family scramble to contact our photographer to get this print made for his memorial service. I remember how great that large print looked when you entered the room. I think of this moment each time I am asked to provide images of someone who has passed away and I remember feeling so grateful that our photographer had taken that beautiful shot.
Today it was announced that Secretary of State, Dennis Richardson, passed away from a Cancer in the form of a brain tumor. He has been battling a severe diagnosis for some time now, while still feeling a little shocked, I did know this day was inevitable buscar. I know most of the Richardson family members personally and Dennis was whole-heartedly involved in our local community through many outlets. It still doesn’t feel like a reality that he is gone. A person like that appears so strong and invincible. He lived a good, strong life full of love and achievement, and I’m sure very little regret.
I only happened to have these great shots of Dennis and his family at the city’s Central Point 4th of July Parade because I was the official photographer, and leaning on the fact that I know their family, I made sure to capture the moment. I’m glad I did.
I agree, I feel like some companies and groups that normally do the parade each year have had a tough time through COVID. I know Matt’s family dynamics have changed with their kids getting older etc. Times change. 🙂
